11 Natural logarithms and the power of E using your calculator

Natural logarithms such as , can be assessed on your calculatorusing using the key. Keys have two functions. key ( ) permits the calculation of powers for . Note that an approximate value for itself can be calculated using the key sequence ( ).

Be aware that is exactly the same as ln. Some calculators include a key instead of .

Calculator has different modes

General modes

The calculator is able to operate in a variety of different modes:

  • COMP, which is used to do general calculations.
  • STAT is a statistical program that can be used for statistical calculations
  • TABLE is a tool utilized to generate tables of numbers.

COMP is short for "computation and STAT stands for the abbreviation for'statistics'..

The Comp mode can be selected using the key sequence (COMP).

Mathematics modes

There are two possible ways to input maths applied to and displayed by the calculator:

  • Math mode, in which fractions are entered and shown in their proper mathematical form like or some odd numbers can be displayed in surds (such as ) or multiples of (such as ).Math mode is set by making use of the keyboard sequence (SETUP) (MthIO).
  • Linear mode, in which fractions such as are entered and displayed using a linear notation - for example, 2 3 - and all irrational numbers (such as and ) are displayed as decimal approximations.Linear mode is selected by using the key sequence (SETUP) (LineIO).

Simply put, an irrational number is one which cannot be expressed as a straightforward fraction.

You will know you are in Math mode when the word Math appears near the right hand side of the top of the calculator display. If it's not that means you're in Linear mode.

In Math mode you can make the answer to display in decimal form either toggle between the mathematical and decimal outputs using .

Fraction display modes

You can configure the calculator so that answers which are heavy on top (such as ) are presented in mixed number format (such such ).

  • To configure the calculator to display as mixed numbers, you must use this key sequence (SETUP) (ab/c).
  • To make the calculator to display top-heavy fractions, follow the key sequence (SETUP) (d/c).

Decimal display modes

The calculator can be programmed to display decimal numbers in various different ways:

  • Normal 1 (Norm 1) mode makes use of scientific notation for any number less than 0.01 but higher than -0.01 The mode displays the answers in whatever decimal locations they can be, subject to the maximum that can fit on the screen. The mode is controlled by (SETUP) (Norm) .
  • Normal 2 (Norm 2) mode uses scientific notation of any number that is less than 0.000000001 but higher than -0.000000001, but otherwise shows the answer to as many decimal places they can be in the limit that is possible on the display. This mode can be entered by using (SETUP) (Norm) .
  • Scientistic notation mode (Sci) displays all decimal numbers in scientific notation using the specified number of important figures. This mode is activated using (SETUP) (Sci) followed by the number of significant figures that are required, for example . If you are using your calculator is set in this mode the indicator on your display is shown.
  • Fixed decimal-place setting (Fix) displays the decimal values to an appropriate the number of decimal decimal positions (unless you are using scientific notation required to match the result to the display). This mode can be set using (SETUP) (Fix) followed by the number of decimal places needed, for instance . When you are using your calculator is in this mode, it displays an indicator for FIX will be displayed.

12.1 Display indicators

The symbols are displayed upon the calculator display to indicate the state of operation.

Symbol on display Meaning
The key has been pressed.
A key was released.
M A value is saved in the memory known as 'M'.
STO The"STORE" key ( (STO)) is held.
RCL The RECALL ( ) key was press.
The calculator is set to measure angles in degrees.
The calculator is set to measure angles in radians.
The calculator is set to measure angles in Gradians.
FIX The calculator is set to show the answers according to a set the number of decimal positions.
SCI The calculator will give results in scientific notation. some fixed numbers of relevant figures.
Math This calculator should make use of Math mode for the input as well as display.
STAT The calculator is in the statistics mode.
There's more info available than is displayed and you can access it through the up and down keys.
The line that is displayed is more than it can be displayed on the display. Other areas of the line are displayed using scrolling left and right cursor keys and .

12.2 Common operations

To Key sequence
Turn on
Turn off (OFF)Note in that calculator will automatically shut off if not used for about 6 minutes.
Adjust the display's brightness. (SETUP) () then use and to adjust, and press once done.
Restore the factory settings (CLR) (Setup) (Yes)
Clear all the content of memories (CLR) (Memory) (Yes)
Restore the default settings , then clear any memory (CLR) (All) (Yes)
Refuse to calculate a number, or quit menus
Obtain an answer
Calculate a decimal number in Math mode
Toggle between exact and decimal results in Math mode
You can toggle between showing fractions as mixed numbers or incorrect fractions in Math mode
Utilize the results of the previous calculation...
... e.g. to find 42 times the previous result
Write a value into Memory 'M' (STO) (M)
Clear the value stored in the memory of M (STO) (M)
Add a value in the 'M' memory
Subtract an amount from that in the memory of 'M'. (M-)
Display the value stored in the 'M' memory (M)
Utilize the number in the memory with the letter 'M' for an equation...
... e.g. to find 42 minus the value in the memory "M" (M)
The angles that are to be measured in degrees (SETUP) (Deg)
Measure angles in Radians (SETUP) (Rad)
Set the answers displayed according to 3 decimal place (To utilize a different number of decimal place, replace with that number) (SETUP) (Fix)
Set answers to be presented in scientific notation using three significant figures (To utilize a different number in significant figures replace the figure with the appropriate number) (SETUP) (Sci)
Change any settings for rounding display (SETUP) (Norm)

The A B, C, D, X, Y memories are used in the same manner as the memory M, with the exception that they are not able to perform add-to' and subtract from' functions.
